Most computing professionals know ELIZA, the 1960s conversational agent that famously persuaded users of human interaction, seemingly passing the Turing Test through social manipulation alone. Fewer, I suspect, have read ELIZA creator Joseph Weizenbaum's excellent related publication, Computer Power and Human Reason.
